Several charities joined forces to help maintain a beauty spot just outside Dunstable.

Volunteers from Sustrans, the British Horse Society and the Wildlife Trust got together last week to carry out the essential work on the Sewell Greenway.

The site is a very popular traffic-free leisure path for walkers, cyclists and horse riders.

Members of those groups teamed up to cut back vegetation to clear the pathway and create the perfect environment for endangered species to thrive.

Peter Bate, area manager for Sustrans, said: “It was really good that such a wide variety of people were able to work together to improve a route we all use and enjoy.

“It was hard work but very rewarding to look back at the end of the day and see what we had achieved.”

Laura Downtown from the Wildlife Trust said: “We see the Sewell Greenway as an important wildlife site which forms a valuable connection between other important sites in the county.

“It is home to a number of nationally rare species and these volunteers are helping ensure their continued existence.”

The groups are planning another work day in November. To join them contact Siobhan McSwiggan on 07557755611.
