A grieving mother has appealed to readers to help her track down a missing safety sign.
Mary Amos-Cole, whose son Rick was killed in a motorbike accident 10 years ago, says the ‘Think Bike’ sign on one side of the Rick Amos memorial roundabout on the A5 has disappeared.
Mary, of Edlesborough, said: “I’m devastated. It’s no good to anyone so please, please give it back.”
She noticed it was missing a week ago when she and her husband – who runs Beards ‘N’ Barnets in Dunstable – drove past. The poles are still there but the sign has gone,” she said. “And no-one seems to know anything about it.”
Rick, a roofer and motorbike instructor, died in a collision in 2004. He was only 39.
The father-of-three was described as an ‘instructor’s instructor’.
Since her son’s death, Mary has campaigned tirelessly for bike awareness and safety.
The mother-of-three and grandmother-of-five has not only written to the Prince of Wales, but has also arranged for three roundabouts to carry ‘Think Bike’ signs and sponsorship bearing Rick’s name.
In addition to the one on the A5/A505 Leighton bypass junction, there are two more on Dunstable’s Woodside Industrial Estate.
There is also a bench on Dunstable Downs.
Mary, who has three other sons, said Rick “was just a bundle of fun”. She added: “He would go that extra mile to help anyone, absolutely anyone. Everybody knew him.”
