Weatherfield Academy, a Dunstable school for children with special educational needs, has been chosen by the local branch of Sainsbury’s as its charity partner for 2014-15.
The supermarket’s customers and staff voted for their preferred worthy cause and Weatherfield will benefit from a year’s worth of support and fundraising from the Luton Road store.
The partnership was launched when Sainsbury’s staff spent a day at the academy replacing and painting fences and a shelter. The school hosts a farm and all the fences are very weathered and need replacing.
Elaine Wilson of Sainsbury’s Dunstable said: “The teachers do an amazing job. We have over the years supported Weatherfield in many ways and it is great we can now help them financially as well.
“One of our colleagues attended Weatherfield and is the first pupil to have gone on to gain a degree. Both the school and our store are very proud of this. The fence-building day was just the beginning of what we want to be able to offer them during the next year and we are very excited to be involved with such a well run and friendly school.”
Sainsbury’s local charity scheme started in 2009 and previous recipients have included Kids In Action, the Salvation Army and Appledown Rescue.
