Students from a Dunstable school demonstrated their creativity in a competition which invited them to show what their home town means to them.

Housebuilder Taylor Wimpey challenged the art students at Streetfield Middle School to produce drawings and paintings inspired by Dunstable.

The resulting artwork featured local landmarks including Dunstable Downs, the Quadrant shopping centre and Priory Church.

The best five entries earned the winners – Bethany Morris, Leah Gourley, Oliver Richardson, Jordanna Armstrong and Chloe Gosling, all in Year 7 – a £20 voucher to spend on arts and crafts materials.

Nicola Rolph, head of art at Streetfield, said: “Normally the pupils’ artwork is teacher-led, so they very much enjoyed the opportunity created by Taylor Wimpey to come up with their own ideas.

“I encouraged them to think about the places in Dunstable where they enjoy spending time with friends and family, while some of the students incorporated their hobbies and interests into their art.

“I was really impressed with their entries. Some of them brought in techniques we have recently been studying, which was great to see, and they really enjoyed discussing each other’s work. The five winners were absolutely over the moon to hear they had been chosen.”

Steve Rolt, regional sales and marketing director for Taylor Wimpey, which is currently building new homes at its Eleanor Gardens development in Dunstable, said: “The standard of the entries we received from the pupils was fantastic. They had clearly put a great deal of thought into their art and it was interesting to see the different associations they all had with Dunstable.

“I’d like to congratulate all the students for the effort they put into the competition and I hope they are just as pleased as we are with the results.”
