Students from the Academy of Central Beds showcased the school’s facilities to two top councillors at a special open afternoon last week.

Central Beds Council leader James Jamieson and Councillor Mark Versallion met with students and staff at the Houghton Regis facility.

The Academy was set up by local headteachers offering ‘alternative provision’ – personalised education for students whose needs are not being met in mainstreams schools or who are at risk of exclusion.

Central Beds Council provided the Academy’s Parkside Drive campus as well as one due to open in Stotfold.

Mr Versallion said: “It was great to visit the ACB last week and to meet the staff and students.

“This is a fantastic learning environment which is already having such a positive effect on the pupils at the school.

“I am very proud that my Council has supported such a venture that is making a real difference to the lives of some of our most vulnerable young people and thereby making Beds an even better place for all.”

Students have the chance to learn practical skills and access opportunities that are not available in most schools.

There is a fully operational garage for mechanics, a hair and beauty room, a woodwork workshop and a professional kitchen.

Headteacher Jeremy Dodd said: “Everyone at the school was delighted to welcome our visitors last week.

“As we approach the end of our first term we can all look back with pride on what has been a fantastic start for the school.
