The fun-loving residents of Poynters Road celebrated their traffic hiatus with a street party over the Bank Holiday weekend.
The mile-long street has been closed to almost all traffic since July 8 for essential road surface improvements expected to take 11 weeks.
But on Saturday, August 25, neighbours turned their unusually-quiet street into a party atmosphere with sound systems, tables, chairs and refreshments.
One of the organisers, resident Joyce Betts, said: “The Poynters Road street party was an enormous success – I think I can speak on behalf of all that attended to say what a thoroughly enjoyable day was had by all.”
Central Beds Council arranged for Beds Police to attend the event, as well as magician Magic Dave to entertain the neighbourhood’s children in the afternoon.
The road repair scheme has used a deep in-situ recycling technique and reused 7,600 tonnes of material from the old road.
By rebuilding the road the end result should be a maintenance-free road for approximately 15-20 years.
Joyce added: “We have lived in the street for many years and now have made lots of new friends and brought the community together.”
Councillor Brian Spurr said: “We’ve really appreciated how patient the residents along Poynters Road have been.
“We all know the work needs to be done, but they have been fantastic and their feedback has been very useful.
“This event demonstrates just how positive community action can be.”
