Poynters Road in Dunstable will be closed for about 11 weeks from next month, so much-needed maintenance work can be carried out.
To prevent areas of the road sinking, major reconstructive work will begin on Monday July 8. Central Beds Council say resurfacing the road would not be sufficient as the underlying structure is failing.
Diversion routes will run along Luton Road, Church Street, Boscombe Road and Porz Avenue.
Councillor Brian Spurr said: “We completely appreciate that these works will cause disruption and we are sorry for any inconvenience caused.
“We will do everything we can to minimise the disruption but because this is such a major route for traffic there will be congestion and delays so please do allow extra time for your journeys.”
The majority of the works will run during the school holidays when traffic is lighter.
Improvements will also be made to pavements and street lighting.
“At times the work could be quite noisy as we need to reach the lower layers of the road.
“However, we will only carry out noisy work between 8am and 6pm Monday – Saturday.”
The council say that the end result should be a maintenance-free road for approximately 15-20 years.
