Medieval Dunstable was the hot topic as Priory House hosted a presentation to promote tourism initiative Discover Bedfordshire.
Restaurateurs, hoteliers and representatives of the tourism industry were present to hear what Dunstable has to offer out-of-town visitors at the event on Friday.
This year is the 800th anniversary of the dedication of the Augustinian Priory Church, and the Medieval Dunstable project was set up with the aim of highlighting the town’s important history.
Dunstable historian Jean Yates said: “Dunstable has a huge history. Researching the town’s medieval history has shown just how important Dunstable was.”
She gave a warm, enthusiastic talk about the history of Dunstable – from the quirky bylaw that restricts the height of one’s dung heap to the pioneering of the latterly Luton-based hat trade.
This summer is packed full of medieval events, including a family weekend on May 18 and 19 featuring battle re-enactments, games, music and expert guides.
Also speaking at the event was Malcolm Ferris-Lay, who educated the audience on the history of tea as a place-setter for Priory House’s new Dunstable Tea promotion.
