A man was taken into intensive care with severe injuries following a traffic collision in Houghton Regis on Friday (February 22).

The 24-year-old, from Houghton Regis, suffered very serious head, chest and face injuries after the grey Peugeot 307 he was driving collided with a telegraph pole in Bedford Road.

Ambulance crews responded to the 2.37pm emergency call and took the man to the Intensive Care Unit at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge.

The driver turned right off Thorn Road into Bedford Road before the collision, 275m south of the junction.

The driver lost control of the vehicle and hit the kerb, before colliding with the telegraph pole, electricity cables and about 20ft of a wooden garden fence.

The vehicle ended up in the road, turned on its side. No other vehicles were involved.

The passenger of the car, an 18-year-old male also from Houghton Regis, suffered a broken collarbone and was taken to Luton and Dunstable Hospital.

The aftermath of the incident caused an obstruction to traffic and police closed off Bedford Road for several hours. Officers were at the scene until about 10.30pm.

A spokesman for highways agency Amey said they remained at the scene until 4am on Saturday (February 23), ensuring the safe removal of the pole.

Police are appealing for anyone who might have witnessed the incident to contact PC Jacqueline Reynolds of the Collision Investigation Unit, investigating, on 01438 757500, or the non-emergency number 101.
